Lecture: The ideal home of the 1980s and 1990s

The Institute of Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences invites you to a lecture by Michaela Janečková on the online exhibition The Ideal Home of the 1980s and 1990s, which is taking place as part of the Strategy AV21 programme. The event will take place on Monday 19 October 2026 from 6.00 pm at Juditina síň (Mostecká 1, Prague 1).

Drawing on the online exhibition, the lecture examines certain concepts from the 1980s and 1990s that recur in writings on housing, illustrating what these concepts denoted and how their visual representations evolved over the course of a decade or two. The path towards the desired cosiness, individuality and, at times, playfulness – which had already begun unobtrusively in the 1970s – was either supported or adjusted by new market conditions in the 1990s. The concepts are illustrated with references from the magazines *Domov* and *Bydlení* and accompanied by contemporary textual commentaries that shed light on the discourse of the period.
