presentation of Peter Bugge's book České světy

We cordially invite you to the presentation of Peter Bugge’s book České světy (Czech Worlds) with the author himself in attendance, which will take place on December 8, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. at the Institute of Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Na Florenci 3, Prague 1). The Danish historian and Bohemist will be accompanied by our colleague Michal Kopeček and Alena Přibáňová, co-editor of the publication from the Institute of Czech Literature.

Peter Bugge works at the Department of European Studies at Aarhus University. He has been professionally involved in Czech history, society, literature, and culture from the 19th century to the present for more than thirty years. The book, whose title, like Bugge’s way of thinking about the „Czech world,“ was inspired by Vladimír Macura, was begun by the author in 2021 in collaboration with editor Eduard Burget. The included studies represent a cross-section of the author’s work to date: in thematic overviews, he traces and analyses the often dramatic and radical transformations of the modern „Czech world“ from its birth and consolidation in the first half of the 19th century to the 1970s and 1980s. He comments on disputes about its fundamental political and cultural values, its internal structure, and its place in relation to the wider European space. And he shows how inseparably the Czech world has always been connected with its own—and foreign—dreams of other worlds.

The book was published by Academia Publishing House, and we are co-organising the event with the Institute of Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
