Seminar: Twice on reformist communism: a dialogue on the meaning of political vision

We would like to invite you to another seminar of the Institute of Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, which will take place on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, at 16:00 in the study room of the Institute of Contemporary History (Vlašská 355/9).

Kristina Andělová and Ondřej Holub will speak at the seminar, presenting their forthcoming monographs on the history of Czechoslovak reform communism. Kristina Andělová’s book examines how Czechoslovak reform communism developed as an ideological movement in the 1970s and 1980s within the domestic and exile leftwing opposition. Ondřej Holub’s work asks a different question: on the basis of what historical assumptions, experiences, and expectations did Austrian communist intellectuals relate to the renewal process in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s? The speakers will offer for critical discussion the method and basic assumptions of their thinking about this historical and political phenomenon of the 20th century and its possible revision through the eyes of contemporary historiography.

Speakers: Kristina AndělováOndřej Holub (oba ÚSD AV ČR)

Comments: Ondřej Slačálek (FF UK) a Jiří Hoppe (ÚSD AV ČR)

Please note that an audio recording of the seminar will be made and will be available on the Institute’s website and Spotify.
