Science Fair 2026

The Science Fair takes place on 4-6 June at the Letňany Exhibition Centre and the theme of our stand is A City of the Past, a City of the Future.
Why do our cities look the way we know them today? What shaped their appearance in the past, and what influences their current form? How different is today’s city from the one that existed before 1989? Studying both older and very recent history allows us to understand how and why cities function, but also to grasp the problems we face in urban environments today. In this exhibition, we explore how urban planning works and who actually decides on the city’s form. We will also focus on memory in public space, particularly the renaming of streets and other places, such as metro stations. However, we must not forget the housing crisis, social inequalities, gentrification, evictions, and other negative phenomena associated with urban settlements. We will illustrate all of this with examples from the socialist era and compare them with the present day.
This exhibition was financially supported by the Jan Amos Komenský Operational Program and is part of the research project “Urbanity: Inequality, Adaptation, and Urban Public Space in a Historical Perspective,” registration number: CZ.02.01.01/00/23_025/0008735.
