The nineteenth volume of The Great History of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown includes, among other things, a description of Antonín Novotný’s two-month departure from the post of First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, an analysis of the Šejna Affair, an account of the causes of the end of censorship and the loss of the Communist Party’s leading role in the media, an analysis of the Communist Party’s Action Program, an explanation of the parameters of the newly emerging political system, a recapitulation of the main results of the renewal of civil society, a report on the partial opening of the borders to the West, an overview of the development of Czechoslovak-Soviet relations and the negotiations between politicians of both states (Communist parties), a summary of the West’s reaction before and after the invasion by Warsaw Pact troops, a description of the Moscow negotiations on August 23–26, 1968, and an assessment of the content of the so-called Moscow Protocol and the consequences of its signing by the Czechoslovak representative.
