Seminář: The Münchner Platz Dresden Memorial and the Czech Victim Group: Research, Education and Remembrance

Srdečně zveme na další z pravidelných seminářů Ústavu pro soudobé dějiny AV ČR, který se koná ve středu 28. ledna 2026 od 16:00 ve studovně ÚSD (Vlašská 355/9).

During the Second World War, Dresden played a prominent role in the judicial persecution of Czechs from the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, but also from the Reichsgau Sudetenland: as the venue of the People’s Court (Volksgerichtshof), the seat of a higher regional court (Oberlandesgericht) and the site of an execution centre. Over two thirds of the 1,330 people executed here were of Czech nationality. The lecture examines the reasons for Dresden’s significance. It introduces the various persecuted groups and sentencing courts and enquires into the whereabouts of the human remains of those executed. In the second part, it reflects on how the memorial at Münchner Platz in Dresden, which was established in 1959 at the seat of the former Dresden District Court, integrated the Czech group of victims in the GDR into its state-legitimising picture of history. Finally, current approaches and themes of the memorial are examined, such as the contacts with different generations of Czech relatives and the educational programme.
