Institute of Contemporary History

The book captures the process of the constitution of collective memory of the communist era during the thirty years after the fall of the communist regime, as presented in public space by installed monuments, memorials, memorial plaques and other artefacts. It describes more than eight hundred places of memory, including several dozen pre-1989 ones, which in certain way communicate with the post-1989 memory culture. The introductory study interprets the basic data of the whole collection and the ways in which the social experience with the communist period is reflected in the memory culture and how this culture and its actors affect the constitution of the memory of the communist past.
